Fresh from CES: Microsoft Surface

Microsoft Surface Display

Microsoft’s new Surface display has the potential to become the world’s most baller coffee table, and a lot more. Surface is a flat, touch-screen table monitor that measures 30 inches diagonal. The table-like computer is designed to recognize many points of contact simultaneously…not just from one finger like a typical touch-screen, but up to dozens of items at once. It is also programmed to recognize and respond to the placement of certain physical objects on the display. For example, at night clubs and restaurants where Surface is used, customers will be able to pay by placing their credit cards onto the Surface screen. They will also be able to order drinks and food with the touch of a button.

Microsoft is in the process of rolling out Surface in locations operated by Harrah’s Entertainment, Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, and T-Mobile USA. But judging by the company’s demonstration at CES, Microsoft has much grander plans for this technology. In its CES preview, a Microsoft representative showed how Surface could be used by a Snowboard shop to give customers the ability to select custom graphics for their boards. The process took less than two minutes to perform and appeared to be extremely intuitive.

In the future, we’re expecting to see Surface make its way into the home, with features such as photo sharing, internet browsing, gaming and more. At a price of $10,000 per display (not entirely unreasonable), we’re hoping that we’ll see Surface in your family room soon.

Pacman? The potential for the Surface is unlimited, especially if it goes 3D eventually. Which isn’t that far off. Can anyone get a discount on this thing when it comes out?
