Make it Snow, Indoors
January 9th, 2008 by BallerHouse
It’s wintertime once again, and that means it’s time to hit the slopes. But with Global Warming on the front page of every newspaper, maybe the snow isn’t hitting like it has in the past. If you’ve got the bank, or maybe just a really rich friend, there’s no need to fret about missing your next trip to the mountains. You can build your own indoor ski resort instead.
Acer Snowmec’s indoor snow centers are custom-built to fit your ski or snowboard needs and can incorporate both left and right hand turns, bridge and tunnel combinations, halfpipes, ramps, viewing areas, and restaurants, among other features. At Ski Dubai, the world’s first Indoor Snow Resort, the company even incorporated a tennis facility into the snow.
What goes into building an indoor snow resort?
According to the company, an indoor snow resort should include a “cold area” with all the necessary additions:
- Insulated Walls, Ceiling and Floor
- Cooling and Ventilation of Cold Area
- Snowmaking and Retention
- Ski Lifts and Travellators (think flat airport escalator at an angle)
- Snow Grooming and terrain forming equipment
- Snow Melting
- Slope Lighting
- Fire Engineering (the cold area will not necessarily comply with local fire codes)
- FIS (Federation International de Ski) accreditation of individual runs
- Theming and Interior Design to Your Specifications

Why we like Acer Snowmec’s Indoor Snow Resort
There are many different indoor snowmaking systems out there, but Acer Snowmec’s is a cut above the rest. Patented in 28 countries and recognized by skiing and refrigeration experts alike as the most advanced technology in its field, Acer’s system allows for thousands of pounds of snow to be kept in a large refrigerated room with comparably minimal upkeep.
Traditionally one would use a snow-maker to generate snow, but Acer uses their patented “Grown in Flight” Snowflake Machine, which produces an “authentic” snowfall. Not only does Acer Snowmec’s technology produce quality snow, but it also offers the lowest capital and running costs when compared like for like with other snow-makers. The daily cost to make snow is about $1.50 per cubic meter (subject to local energy costs).

What’s it Cost to Build an Indoor Snow Resort?
At an entry-level cost starting well over a million dollars, an Indoor Snow Resort will cost you far more than a lifetime’s worth of season passes. But, at least you’ll never miss a day because of the weather.
