CES Wrap Up: DLP 3-D TV Still a Novelty
January 10th, 2008 by BallerHouse
DLP 3-D ready TV is being marketed as “the next big thing in HD TV.” Unfortunately, if you want to feel like a part of movies, you’re still going to have to make the trip to your local IMAX. Unless you build an IMAX theater in your home.
At CES, we were given the opportunity to screen Beowulf in 3-D TV, and we were not impressed. Here’s a short summary of why the 3-D TV experience is lacking:
- First, to watch a movie in 3-D, you must wear special glasses. These glasses give you a headache if you wear them for more than several minutes, making it near impossible to enjoy a full-length movie in 3-D.
- Second, the 3-D HD TV creates a floating image, but the effect extends less than a few feet beyond the screen. Picture those 3-D arcade games from the 90’s and you’ll get the idea. Only, unlike those 3-D arcade games, DLP 3-D TV requires you to wear dorky glasses.
But, if you’re looking for a party trick to impress your houseguests, DLP 3-D TV could fit the bill. On the positive side, a 3-D ready TV allows you to switch from regular HD TV to 3-D TV with the click of a button, and vice versa. So, you could bust out the 3-D glasses for just a scene or two. The CLP 3-D TV is also Bue-ray and HD DVD player compatible.
For those who really want the full 3-D experience, we’d recommend holding off on DLP 3-D for now. Better technology is on the way.

This is very innovative technology. Love DLP, its always on the cutting edge. This would make for the ultimate video gaming experience, along with no burn in unlike LCD and Plasma. Its all about the mirrors!
