Oudhout Turns Old Wood into Modern Icons

Diederick Kraaijeveld (aka Oudhout) is a Dutch artist who specializes in transforming recycled wood into large-scale replicas of popular cultural icons, like the 51-inch wide Dodge Charger pictured above. In his first solo New York show, coming April 9 at Cheryl Hazan Projects (466 Washington Street), Oudhout will be rolling out a pair of black Chuck Taylors, a giant old school Coke bottle, the Charger, and other works.

Unbelievably, Oudhout does not use a drop of paint in any of his work. Instead, he uses previously painted planks, salvaged during intensive trips along dumpsters, old Amsterdam canal mansions, run down farms and faraway coasts.

While he resides in the Netherlands, Kraaijeveld’s taste is surprisingly American, perhaps due to his stint studying Creative Writing at UT Austin. American muscle cars are a favorite subject for the artist, and his first piece wooden piece replicated a 1966 Mustang, the car he drove for years. Now that he’s often hauling old wood, Oudhout can be found driving a Chevy Silverado pickup. Although he swears that he’ll purchase another Mustang someday.
