Upcoming Sotheby’s Contemporary Art Auction Loaded with Big Money Works from Murakami, Warhol, Others
May 8th, 2008 by BallerHouse
There may be talks of a recession going on, but you’d never know it scrolling through the auction catalog for Sotheby’s Contemporary Art Evening, taking place in New York on May 14th. The contemporary art auction is chock-full of six and seven-figure pieces from modern icons like Takashi Murakami, Andy Warhol, Jeff Koons, Donald Judd, Dan Flavin, Damien Hirst, Erik Bulatov, and Yoshitomo Nara.
One of the wilder works on the auction block is Murakami’s My Lonesome Cowboy statuette (pictured left). Murakami crafted the 100 x 46 x 36-inch sculpture in 1998 from oil, acrylic, fiberglass, and iron. The signed work is expected to fetch somewhere between $3-4 million.
From the extensive Contemporary Art Evening catalog, we’ve chosen to highlight some of our favorite items below. Coincidentally, they happen to be some of the better bargains at the auction.
- Thumb 1: Andy Warhol, Self-Portrait, $2-3 million
- Thumb 2: Dan Flavin, Monument for V. Tatlin, $600-800K
- Thumb 3: Yoshitomo Nara, Light My Fire, $1-1.5 million
