Best Self-bought Gift EVER!: Your Own Aircraft Carrier

December 1st, 2010 by Des

So I’ve had this dream for a while: buy a small island or a small moving island, form my own cool geek nation & declare independence – after all, international waters are international waters & living on the high seas means that you can do as you like, which is why that annoying Somalian pirate problem hasn’t been resolved yet.

But back to my fantasy: owning your island or a mobile island means that you can form your own independent nation & make your own laws, so that’s why I’m excited to learn that the Royal Navy’s HMS Invincible is up for sale. You see, the HMS Invincible is an aircraft carrier that has been in service with the British navy for 32 years now & is being retired after a good run that has seen some action in various conflicts through the years (like the Falklands, Balkans & Iraq wars).

Call me crazy, but I’m sure I’m not the only one out there who gets a kick out of the idea of owning your own aircraft carrier – you can cruise around the worlds oceans, fly aircraft to and from it, build your own golf course on the runway and still have enough space for an olympic-sized swimming pool.

The HMS Invincible was due to be sold to the Australian navy in 1982 for a cool 175 million pounds, but that deal fell through when the Falklands war broke out.

Thankfully the price has come down significantly; Britain’s Ministry of Defense expects to get $3.1 million for the ship – but don’t get too excited, they’ve cunningly removed the ships engines, so any potential buyers would have to look at installing new engines or using the ship for scrap metal.

Personally I’m hoping some Russian Baller billionaire will buy the aircraft carrier, install some big & powerful engines, & declare an uber cool independent Baller state, complete with gold shower stalls & a 9-hole golf course & driving range on deck.

Interested parties can view the ship’s profile on edisposals.com where you can either “Add  to Wishlist”, ” Compare” or “Add to Cart”. If Santa was real, the HMS Invincible would be on the top of my Christmas wishlist!
