All of us have a stash of old photographs sitting somewhere in a box or album. It is always a good idea to have them digitized and framed for posterity rather than subject them to daily wear and tear. If you’ve already tried scanning them using a traditional scanner, you would appreciate the time consuming nature of the process. Now, there is a quicker and easier way to convert photographs from paper to digital. The Desktop Photo to Digital Picture Converter is a USB device that will digitize your images in a jiffy.
The Desktop Photograph to Digital Picture Converter is essentially a digital camera with an attached tray. Just place your photographs in the tray and shut it. At the touch of a button, the Converter will snap a picture of the inserted photograph using a 5 megapixel CMOS sensor. The resulting image is saved as a JPEG or TIF file to a computer via USB. You will definitely get clear and color balanced digital pictures with a resolution up to 600 dpi (3,600 X 2,400 pixels). The package also includes software for editing, cropping and resizing pictures. The device is Mac, Windows 7, Vista and XP compatible. It is quite compact, measuring 7″ H x 9″ W x 7 1/2″ D and extremely portable and lightweight, at 1lb.
The speed of the Photo converter is much faster than that of a conventional flatbed scanner. The output also compares reasonably to the quality of images obtained using a scanner. Our advice to you would be, not to worry too much about the quality of detail. The quality is good though not the best and sharpest. Another downside is the size of the prints to be converted. The Desktop Photograph to Digital Picture Converter is limited to small sized photographs (1/2″ x 3 1/2″, 3 1/2″ x 4 1/2″, 3 1/2″ x 5″, and 4″ x 6″). If you’re looking to convert larger images, you’re better off saving them for your Hp scanner.
The Desktop Photo to Digital Picture Converter is available for purchase for $100 at Hammacher Schlemmer.
