Anna Colombo Brings the Heat with Her Outrageous Fire Sculptures

Fire sculpture

Over the past two days we’ve come across a variety of fantastic fire features, but none has impressed us as much as artist Anne Colombo’s outrageously innovative fire sculptures. Trained as a classical sculptor, Anne Colombo heads the Brooklyn-based Colombo Construction Company (CCC), a full-service conceptual design and fabrication firm specializing in large-scale fire, water and wind works. The company works with clients to create site-specific sculptures that are baller beyond belief. With each fire sculpture Colombo helps to “restore the hearth as a ceremonial place and as a point of convergence,” the function it’s served for the past 600,000 years with the exception of the last 100 or so.

Since Anne Colombo’s work stands for itself, we’ve chosen a large selection of our favorite fire sculptures from CCC’s 2008 collection to highlight in our image gallery below. Each fire sculpture carries a set price tag, with works starting at $4,000 and ranging up to $85,000.

Themed Construction by Cost of Wisconsin

March 10th, 2008 by BallerHouse

cost-3.jpgWant a life-sized orca statue in your pond? How about a playground slide coming out of a T-Rex’s mouth? Or a theme park worthy water ride? Few companies specialize in themed construction. But, of the major players in the business, Cost of Wisconsin stands out from the rest.

The company employs expert designers, craftsmen and sculptors that create natural and synthetic waterfalls, aquariums, rockwork, specialty concrete, landscape and themed elements. Many of Cost’s crazy creations end up becoming featured architectural elements in zoos, aquariums, museums, theme parks, and casinos. Some are straight up tacky. Others are classy. All are extremely custom and could make a cool addition to your house or yard. More pictures after the jump… Read the rest of this entry »

Bring Jurassic Park to Your Yard With A Life-Sized T-Rex Statue

March 3rd, 2008 by BallerHouse

If you’re looking to make an absurd novelty addition to your yard, drinkstuff.com has the perfect product: a life-sized, $57,000 Tyrannosaurus Rex garden statue made from fiberglass and resin. They’ve also got a life-sized Camarasaurus for sale at the same price.

We find it ironic that a drinking products website is selling these statues. But it does make some sense, because it would take us at least a few beers a piece before buying a life-sized dinosaur statue starts to sound like a good idea.

In any case, these Jurassic Park-like statues could make a funny addition to your crib, especially if your backyard resembles a jungle. Since each statue is made by hand, the wait time for delivery is three to four months, so you better think about ordering soon if you want your dinosaur statue to arrive in time for summer.

Finally, we’ve found a bronze sculpture that we’d be proud to display in our driveway. Made by BigBronze, the 60-inch tall, 25-inch wide “Hot Rod Girl/ Hood Wench” statue sells for a reasonable $5,995 plus shipping. The downside: you’ll have to leave one of your whips out in the elements.

Gun Sculptures from Cambodia

Gun Dog Sculpture

After the 1998 war ended in Cambodia, the country’s government worked with officials from the European Union to destroy 125,000 weapons. A group called Draft, founded in 2003 by two Brits, got their hands on thousands of these weapons and started Peace Art Project Cambodia (PAPC) to turn these arms into art. The resulting sculptures feature AK barrels and handles, among other gun parts, and they are currently sold through The Art House gallery in Siem Reap, Cambodia. Prices start at around $600 for a basic Christmas tree shape and run over $10,000 for more complex works. We are a big fan. Although the prices strike us as a little steep.
